(1:16; 2:1) In verse 1b, \u201cappropriate to sound \tdoctrine\u201d is literally \u201cbehavior that goes with sound teaching.\u201d \tAs Christians and teachers, why is our behavior just as important as \twhat we know and say?<\/li>\n<li>What is the significance that \tolder people in the church are mentioned first? (2\u20133) What \tcharacter and lifestyle should Titus teach older men, and why? (2) \tHow should he instruct older women? (3) What responsibility do they \thave in the church? (4)<\/li>\n<li>What should younger women focus \ton doing? (4b\u20135a) What are the ramifications of doing so? (5b) Why \tis younger women\u2019s role so crucial for healthy family and church \tlife? How should Titus encourage young men? (6; cf. Lk9:23) Note the \trepetition of \u201cself-control\u201d (2,5,6,12). Why is self-control \tessential for discipleship and character building?<\/li>\n<li>How could Titus himself have \tcredibility in teaching these things? (7\u20138a) What does it mean to \t\u201cshow integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech\u201d? What \tinfluence would this have? (8b) What can employees learn from the \tinstructions to slaves? (9\u201310a) What is the ultimate goal of \thaving good behavior in society? (10b)<\/li>\n<li>For what rationale should we be \tconcerned about our influence on those outside the Christian \tcommunity? (11) How do people tend to abuse God\u2019s grace? \t(Ro6:1,15) Read verse 12. What strong pressures do we face while \ttrying to live godly lives? How does God\u2019s grace \u201ctrain\u201d us \tpractically?<\/li>\n<li>What blessed hope does God\u2019s \tgrace give us, and how does this hope help us to live godly lives? \t(13) What did our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, do for us by \this grace? (14) What new identity and motivation does Jesus\u2019 \tredeeming grace give us? How did Paul instruct Titus to teach these \tthings? (15)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"sdfootnote1\">\n<p><a name=\"sdfootnote1sym\" href=\"#sdfootnote1anc\">1<\/a> <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">In Titus chapter 2, in the NIV \tEnglish translation the words \u201cteach\u201d or \u201cteaching\u201d appear \tnine times (1,2,3 [two times],7,9,10,12,15). But in Greek, a variety \tof words are used. In verses 1 and 15 the verb is \u201claleho,\u201d \twhich means, \u201cto speak.\u201d In verses 1, 7 and 10 the noun is \t\u201cdidaskaleeah,\u201d which means, \u201cteaching\u201d or \u201cinstruction.\u201d \tIn verses 2, 3a and 9 in Greek, the verb \u201cteach\u201d actually is not \tused. In verse 3b the adjective is \u201ckalodidaskalos,\u201d which \tmeans, \u201cteaching that which is good,\u201d or, \u201ca teacher of \tgoodness.\u201d In verse 4a, the verb \u201curge\u201d in English is \t\u201csofronidzo,\u201d which means to restore to one\u2019s senses, moderate \tor control. In verse 12, the verb is \u201cpaheedeeo,\u201d which means to \ttrain children, chastise or castigate with words.
